Katharine Hepburn's Former LA Love Nest Hits the Market

When Katharine Hepburn was new to Hollywood, for some five years she rented this deluxe hacienda and, rumor has it, carried on an affair there with agent Leland Hayward.

The Mexican-style home, which is on the market for $7.395 million, sits on an ultra-secluded estate in Los Angeles’ Coldwater Canyon. The property drinks in light all day long, which is unusual for a canyon home, according to Edward Fitz of The Agency, the listing agent for the home.

All that sun nurtures the garden’s sumptuous roses, some of which were likely planted by horror-movie star Boris Karloff when he owned the home in the 1930s and ’40s.

Several of Karloff’s friends reportedly asked if they could be cremated and buried in his beloved rose garden. “It never happened, to my knowledge,” Fitz said.

Built in 1927, the 5 bedroom, 5.5-bath home is situated on nearly an acre on what remains a quiet street offering lots of privacy. It features thick, whitewashed masonry walls, red tile floors and exposed-beam ceilings. There are fireplaces inside and out, as well as a pizza oven in the courtyard.

An eat-in kitchen combines rustic charm with chef-grade appliances, and a gorgeous wooden bar sits in one skylighted nook.

The master suite boasts a fireplace, large seating area, French doors opening to the outdoors, and a bathroom with an extravagantly large tub plus a separate shower with seating.
